What is the European regulatory framework governing fire-fighting pumping systems? (h2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UNI EN 12845:2020<\/strong> standard establishes the requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems<\/strong> (i.e., automatic deluge\/sprinkler extinguishing systems). Significant updates have recently been introduced, specifically with the implementation of two new technical standards for the design and certification of fire protection water supplies<\/strong>. These are UNI EN 12259-12:2023 and UNI EN 17451:2025. The former defines the requirements for fire-fighting pumps, while the latter outlines those for manufacturing fire-fighting pumping units. These are complementary product (the pump) and subsystem (the pump set) standards that integrate the main system standard. Consequently, it can be stated that to comply with UNI EN 12845:2020<\/strong>, a sprinkler system must necessarily use UNI EN 12259-12:2023 pumps and UNI EN 17451:2025 units<\/strong>. A clarification regarding hydrant networks: in Italy, these are regulated by the UNI 10779 standard. Since the latter refers back to UNI EN 12845 for the water supply, it follows that for this type of system as well, it is mandatory to use pumps that meet the requirements of UNI EN 12259-12:2023.<\/p>\n

What are the requirements of the UNI EN 12259-12:2023 standard for fire-fighting pumps?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The standard specifies the characteristics that centrifugal pumps must possess if intended for fire-fighting applications within the scope of UNI EN 12845:2020. The requirements are clear and stringent regarding materials, performance and the identification plate, which must contain predefined fields and be non-removable, so that fire-fighting pumps are immediately recognizable.<\/p>\n

The permitted materials are selected for their strength and corrosion-resistant properties: cast iron, stainless steel or bronze for the pump casing; stainless steel or bronze for the impeller and shaft; bronze or stainless steel for the impeller seat rings.<\/p>\n

With regard to performance, the standard identifies the requirements for Q-H curves, introduces the concept of nominal flow rate Qr and establishes that the tolerance curves must comply with standard EN ISO 9906:2012 \u2013 Grade 2B.<\/p>\n

How is the nominal flow rate of a fire-fighting pump defined? (h2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

When designing a fire-fighting pump, it is crucial that its curve remains stable and reliable in every scenario, meaning that it does not operate at its limit and maintains adequate pressures even when water demand increases. To certify a fire-fighting pump, a nominal flow rate Qr<\/strong> is considered, with an NPSHr (Net Positive Suction Head required) of less than 5 m<\/strong>. The NPSHr represents the energy the fluid needs to overcome friction losses and enter the pump without vaporizing, thereby avoiding the phenomenon of cavitation. The Qr defined in this way indicates that at this specific point, the pump operates under controlled and stable conditions. This is the core of the curve, the point from which all other performances are evaluated and regulatory requirements are applied. In fact, the pump’s Q-H curve must also include the Qr x 140% point, corresponding to 70% of the pressure at Qr<\/strong>. What does this mean? It means that the performance curve must be such that, considering a Qr (design flow rate) with NPSH < 5 m, at 140% of this Qr, the pump is still capable of delivering 70% of the head. If the curve were too steep, with sharp drops in pressure as the flow rate increases, it would not be possible to guarantee the necessary safety under real emergency conditions.<\/p>\n

Caprari fire-fighting solutions: standardized surface centrifugal pumps and vertical lineshaft pumps. <\/strong>(h2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Caprari fire-fighting solutions include the NC.E series standardized single-stage horizontal end-suction centrifugal pumps<\/strong> and the P.E series vertical lineshaft centrifugal pumps<\/strong>. Both families meet the requirements of the UNI EN 12259-12:2023 standard.<\/p>\n
